2039 Post-Draft Analysis - 1st Round
1. New York Mets - SP Jorge Bergoglio Grade: A
No surprise at #1 this year, as Bergoglio was too good for the Mets to pass up. This pick gives them an ace for the next decade plus.
2. San Francisco Giants (from Black Bears) - C Tyr Volund Grade: B
When San Francisco traded up to the #2 spot, I was sure it was for Schweinsteiger, so I was surprised to see them take Volund. I can certainly see the logic behind it, but I think Schweinsteiger will be the better player and would have been the better fit.
3. Mexico City Aztecs - SS Mario Andres Grade: C
I had a feeling someone would fall in love with Andres' average and pick him a lot higher than I projected, but in a class this strong I can't justify picking a player with no power and a low FLD% at #3 overall. Shortstops with less than .980 FLD% tend to struggle in the field, and anything less than .975 is usually disastrous.
4. Arizona Diamondbacks (from Tigers through White Sox) - LF Amir Atkins Grade: B+
Atkins should be an all-star for a very long time, and in a different class would have probably been the consensus best hitter in the draft. I don't think he's as good as Schweinsteiger, but aclilly17 apparently doesn't use 3rd basemen.
5. Minnesota Twins - CF Zach Metzinger Grade: B+
Another great player whose only flaw is that he isn't Schweinsteiger. Metzinger's insane fire should make him an elite leadoff hitter.
6. Texas Rangers - SP Keisuke Honda Grade: A
The Rangers needed pitching, and while it was probably tempting to take Schweinsteiger here, Texas stayed true to their board and grabbed the best pitcher available.
7. Washington Nationals - 3B Bastian Schweinsteiger Grade: A
Jabarwick must have been the happiest GM in the draft to have the best offensive player fall to him at #7.
8. St. Louis Cardinals - SP Kim Shin-Wook Grade: B-
The Cardinals probably liked the strikeouts, but I'm not sold on Shin-Wook, and St. Louis doesn't have a 2B on their roster while there was a very good one available here.
9. Shanghai Crowned Cranes - SP James Todd Smith Grade: B+
Shanghai needed pitching as bad as anyone, and while he'll never be a star, I think Smith will have a quietly solid career.
10. Chicago Cubs - 2B Kenzo Yokoyama Grade: A
The Cubs already have a pretty good 2B in Tsubasa, but Yokoyama was too good to pass up here. He's already a very developed prospect as just 22 years old, and has an extremely high ceiling.
11. Los Angeles Angels - 3B Yong Gi Grade: B+
Gi is a talented prospect with one flaw - he doesn't walk. His defense is what really makes this a solid pick though.
12. Toronto Blue Jays - CF Benjamin Lowe Grade: B
Lowe is a good all-around player, but lacks that one star quality. He'll have big shoes to fill as the replacement for Derek Beauprez in Toronto.
13. Vancouver Canadians (from Giants) - 1B Young Suk Grade: B-
Vancouver acquired this pick hoping to draft Lowe, only to see Toronto pick him one spot ahead. Suk is a quality hitter in the making, but is probably limited to a full-time DH role.
14. Atlanta Braves - 3B Conan Lincoln Grade: A
Lincoln is one of my favorite players in the draft. He'll need a few years of development but he'll hit for both average and power in his prime.
15. Seattle Cascades - CF Vojtech Vilem Grade: D+
I've studied Vilem over and over to see what I'm missing about him that would cause a team to pick him so high, but I just can't find it. His OBP is high, but he's average or below average everywhere else. I don't see the appeal here.
16. Chicago Cubs (from Astros) - RF Jordan Dimas Grade: A
Chicago struck gold with both of their 1st round picks. Dimas is another one of my favorite prospects, and he should develop into a very versatile hitter who can fill any lineup position.
17. St. Louis Cardinals (from White Sox) - RF Hershel Yakov Grade: B+
Yakov's AVG and OBP are insanely high, especially for a 20 year old. He doesn't hit for power, but that's ok. Expect to see him on base a ton for a talented young Cardinals squad.
18. Washington Nationals (from Phillies) - SP Ghoste Erickson Grade: A
I thought a team might like Erickson enough to pick him top 12, but instead Washington lands him at #18. Erickson might struggle initially, but his ceiling is very high, and I believe he's the last true impact SP in the draft.
19. San Francisco Giants (from Canadians) - 2B Kevin Bernard Grade: B+
I like Bernard a lot, although San Fran might not be able to play both he and 2B Quillin.
20. Arizona Diamondbacks - SP Rajiv van La Parra Grade: B
This is a true wait and see pick right here. Van La Parra's high fire could make him a great slump bust starter, but his high H/9 leaves a big question mark.
21. Tokyo A's - SP Lynden Gooch Grade: D
This pick is another huge head-scratcher. The only things I like about Gooch are his BB/9 and his name. If he were 20 years old, maybe I could see the potential, but at 23 I don't think he'll have enough time to develop into a serviceable starter.
22. Baltimore Orioles - SP Julio Herrera Grade: B+
I wasn't sure if Herrera would go in the 1st round, but I like him more and more the more I look at the stats.
23. Washington Nationals (from Expos) - RP Ben Simmons Grade: C+
I don't have a fundamental problem with drafting an RP in the 1st round, but I didn't see any RP in this draft worthy of a 1st round selection.
24. Toronto Blue Jays (from Yankees) - 1B Bertrand Russell Grade: A
I like Russell a lot. Offensively, he's just a bit better than decent, but a 1st basemen with 6.9 RF is a valuable asset in this league. When you can find a defensive standout with a serviceable bat, you have to take him.
25. Los Angeles Dodgers - SP Herby Fernandez Grade: B
Fernandez is a long-term project. I don't like the high walks/low fire, but LAD is desperate enough for starting pitching that it makes sense to take a gamble on him.
26. Detroit Tigers (from ?Rocksteady?) - C Patrick Fitzgerald Grade: B+
Fitzgerald is a long time away from being a lineup-worthy bat, but a catcher with his range is absolutely a 1st round talent. With Detroit in a full rebuild, they can safely stash him away until his offense comes along a bit, and then reap the rewards of his defense.
27. Cincinnati Reds - LF Thomas Cummings Grade: A
I'm surprised that Cummings nearly fell out of the 1st round, as he's a borderline top 15 talent in my mind. Excellent value for the Reds here.
28. Boston Red Sox - CF Alonso Cipriano Grade: B+
Cipriano is another guy who I was surprised to see fall. He'll need more time than Cummings to be a difference maker, but this is an excellent developmental 20 year old.

2039 Mock Draft
1. New York Mets - SP Jorge Bergoglio
Bergoglio is the most complete starting pitcher to enter the league in years, and at just 22 years old should give the Mets a true ace at the top of their rotation now and in the future.
2. San Francisco Giants (from Black Bears) - 3B Bastian Schweinsteiger
Schweinsteiger excels at just about everything, from average to power to defense. With a roster already full of young talent, San Francisco adds the superstar hitter they need to take them to the next level.
3. Mexico City Aztecs - SP Keisuke Honda
Mexico City is in a tough position, being nearly devoid of talent outside of Paige-Carter and an aging Pina II, but it also gives them the flexibility to pick anyone on the board. Ultimately, despite there being a ton of great hitters available, the Aztecs address the rotation with a high upside pick in the 22 year old Honda.
4. Arizona Diamondbacks (from Tigers through Alamos) - CF Zach Metzinger
Arizona is in an interesting position, being a playoff team without any glaring needs. Therefore, they have the luxury of going best player available, and Metzinger is a well-rounded switch hitter who will make an immediate impact with his defense and fire.
5. Minnesota Twins - LF Amir Atkins
In a weaker offensive class, he would probably be off the board already, but the strength of the 2039 class allows Atkins, who has immediate all-star potential, to be picked up by Minnesota at #5.
6. Texas Rangers - SP Kim Shin-Wook
The Rangers have enough on the offensive side to get back to being the playoff contender they were just a couple seasons ago, so starting pitching should be a priority for them. This pick is a reach, but if Texas is not able to trade down, I think they address the rotation at #6 even if it's a bit high for the SPs left on the board.
7. Washington Nationals - 2B Kenzo Yokoyama
There are a lot of interesting prospects that might catch Washington's eye here, but Yokoyama is the most polished of them at just 22 years old.
8. St. Louis Cardinals - C Tyr Volund
St. Louis made a splash in the offseason already, sending former #6 overall pick Gaston Frist to San Antonio for star CF Andrew Boucher. Indications are that the Cardinals are ready to start winning now, and Volund's combination of power and range should establish him as a top-tier catcher sooner than later.
9. Shanghai Crowned Cranes - SP James Todd Smith
Shanghai has a good roster, but needs major help in the rotation. Smith is the type of prospect who doesn't jump out at you, but as you look at the stats closely you realize he could turn out to be a very solid starting pitcher. He has limitations, mainly low fire, but should be a staple in the Shanghai rotation for many years.
10. Chicago Cubs - RF Jordan Dimas
The outfield is the strength of this Cubs team, but with Tino Morales' future with the club being uncertain and nobody locked into the DH position, this pick makes a lot of sense for a team needing longterm options.
11. Los Angeles Angels - 3B Yong Gi
There are a few options LA could consider here, but this pick comes down to the fact that they don't currently have a 3B on the roster. Gi is an elite defensive player with a very high batting average; if he walked more he would have probably been a top 7 pick.
12. Toronto Blue Jays - CF Benjamin Lowe
He isn't Derek Beauprez, but he is a lefty with plus speed, and Toronto's outfield looks pretty thin.
13. San Francisco Giants - 1B Young Suk
The Giants have young talent at pretty much every position. Suk could platoon as a DH against righties, or give them an interesting trade piece to go all in on an ace if they decide they're ready to compete now.
14. Atlanta Braves - 3B Conan Lincoln
Lincoln is a far superior prospect to current 21 year old 3B Scissum, giving Atlanta a huge upgrade immediately and a guy who has all-star potential in his future.
15. Seattle Cascades - SS Mario Andres
Andres is a .320 hitter with great range, but his lack of power and low FLD% are concerning. If he can avoid making an extreme amount of errors, he could very well be the steal of the draft at #15.
16. Chicago Cubs (from Astros) - SP Ghoste Erickson
The Cubs have expressed interest in trading this pick, which they got from Houston, but if they stay put, look for them to get younger in the rotation by adding the best power arm in the draft.
17. St. Louis Cardinals (from Alamos) - 2B Kevin Bernard
St. Louis has been finding quality players in the draft for years now, and without a 2B currently on the roster, this is too good a fit to pass up.
18. Philadelphia Phillies - RF Hershel Yakov
Yakov has a knack for getting on base, but lacks the speed that most GMs look for at the top of their order. Still, Yakov has all of the tools to be a quality contact hitter, and I don't see him dropping out of the top 20.
19. Vancouver Canadians - 1B Bertrand Russell
Russell has the highest range factor of 1B in this draft, and that's a sought after commodity these days. This pick also gives Vancouver the flexibility to trade one or both of their current 1B.
20. Arizona Diamondbacks - SP Rajiv van La Parra
Arizona is the perfect fit for van La Parra, as he looks like a prototypical aclilly17 pitcher. He'll need some time to develop, but could become a slump bust star.
21. Tokyo A's - CF Alonso Cipriano
A young, left-handed speedster is exactly what Tokyo needs at the top of the order for the future. He shouldn't need to step in immediately, so they can let him sit and develop into their future leadoff hitter.
22. Baltimore Orioles - SS Aleksandr Isay
Baltimore needs to get younger offensively, and Isay is probably the best 20 year old infielder available.
23. Washington Nationals (from Expos) - SP Herby Fernandez
With their 2nd pick in the 1st round, Washington adds another arm to a rotation of young, quality pitchers.
24. Toronto Blue Jays (from Yankees) - 1B Obadiah Harmony
Harmony is a talented 20 year old that will be able to take over for the aging Pope.
25. Los Angeles Dodgers - LF Thomas Cummings
For the first time in a while, Rxk192 has a lot of work to do to make his team competitive again, but finding a guy like Cummings this late is a good start. LA would probably like a pitcher, but there are no SPs left on the board who are 1st round value, and Cummings could have easily been a top 15-20 pick.
26. Detroit Tigers (from White Sox) - C Patrick Fitzgerald
Detroit isn't going to find an impact player at this spot, so it makes sense for them to pick up a defensive specialist to stash away until his offense develops.
27. Cincinnati Reds - RF Enrique Godofredo
Cincinnati has the luxury of being able to pick a developmental project here. Godofredo's speed and fire give him a high ceiling, and this could be a surprisingly good pick many years down the road.
28. Boston Red Sox - CF Vojtech Vilem
Boston has very few needs, and Vilem is the best player available at this spot.

2037 Post-Draft Analysis
1. Minnesota Twins - SP Harry Winks Grade: C-
An argument can be made that Winks is the best pitcher in the draft, but passing on Gilster Jr. is completely inexcusable, and according to Sirburt was the result of a bad computer glitch in the Minnesota draft room.
2. Montreal Expos - CF Brandon Gilster Jr. Grade: A
"Oh look what I found."
3. Washington Nationals - SP Daryl Janmaat Grade: B-
Janmaat was probably the top pitcher on a lot of draft boards, but I think he's hit or miss, and with Washington in a full rebuild the 21 year old Frist would have been a better fit.
4. San Francisco Giants - 1B Ervin Gore Grade: B
The Giants felt Gore was just too good to pass up, and that's understandable - he may put up even better numbers than Gilster Jr. as a rookie. But the Giants have almost nothing in their rotation, and Gore will most likely be a career DH. Time will tell if San Francisco can build a good enough rotation to make this a good pick.
5. Detroit Tigers - RP Pat Woodcock Grade: D-
Auto pick screws over Detroit. An RP at #5 overall is already garbage, and Woodcock isn't even the best RP in the draft.
6. St. Louis Cardinals - SP Gaston Frist Grade: A
The Cardinals are the lucky beneficiary of Frist dropping out of the top 5. He could very well progress to be the best pitcher in the class.
7. Chicago White Sox - SS Khalil Greene Jr. Grade: B+
Beansnap got his guy here. There may have been better hitters on the board, but Greene Jr. is elite defensively and only 22 years old. I really like this pick.
8. St. Louis Cardinals - SP Jan Vertonghen Grade: A
St. Louis gets their 2nd star pitcher. Vertonghen is a future Cy Young winner if he gets slump busted.
9. Philadelphia Phillies - LF Aries Matterhorn Grade: C-
Philly didn't get screwed by this auto pick nearly as bad as Detroit did, but it's hard to justify this one with Sortino, Craffa and Howard still on the board.
10. New York Mets - 3B Manlius Howard Grade: B-
Howard was expected to go somewhere in the 9-12 range, but the Mets have to find a way to play both he and Tejera, and their rotation is still in shambles.
11. Washington Nationals (from Astros) - CF Joshua Kincade Grade: B+
Washington traded up to get this one as the Dodgers were almost definitely going to draft Kincade. Kincade was a sleeper pick who flew up draft boards recently due to his speed. This is a really good pick for Washington, even though they had to give up a good young RP for it.
12. Los Angeles Dodgers - 1B Darnell Sheets Grade: D-
In what was already a crazy draft, this one was the most baffling pick to me. Rxk is almost too good of a GM to be questioned at this point, but the only explanation I can think of for this pick is that either Rxk or Pennantchase screwed up the user list. I'm 100% sure he wouldn't have chosen this guy if he were present for the draft.
13. Los Angeles Angels - SP Michael Vorm Grade: C
Vorm is one of the most interesting prospects in this draft. His H/9, K/9, and Fire are all excellent for a 20 year old, but his walks makes him completely undraftable to some GMs. Evaluating this pick comes down to how much you value the BB/9 stat; some GMs disregard it entirely, and to them this is a good pick. I personally like Vorm as a prospect, but the Angels should have done whatever they could to trade down if they wanted Vorm, because he almost definitely wasn't going in the top 20. Harry86 is going to look like either an idiot or a genius in a few years.
14. Shanghai Crowned Cranes - RF Carlos Sortino Grade: A
This is a great value pick for Shanghai, and Sortino is an immediate upgrade to their OF.
15. St. Louis Cardinals - SP Cha Du-Ri Grade: B+
I love Du-Ri, and the Cardinals once again got lucky with a great pitcher falling to them. The only reason this pick isn't an A is because they now have 3 excellent SPs and nothing on the offensive side.
16. Houston Astros (from Nationals) - C Matthew Craffa Grade: A
Craffa at 16? You have to be kidding. If Houston wasn't already on the brink of being a serious competitor, they sure are now.
17. Texas Rangers - 3B Gabriel Lowry Grade: C+
I expected Lowry to slip further down because of his abysmal OBP. Good player, but Texas needs pitching.
18. Vancouver Canadians - 2B Aacosh Shah Grade: B-
Shah has the makings of a great leadoff hitter, but 18 is a bit high, especially with House still on the board.
19. Baltimore Orioles - SP Erik Lamela Grade: B
Lamela has a high ceiling, and the O's have the luxury of having a good enough team to let him sit and develop. I would have liked to see Baltimore go for a win-now pick at this spot (Garfunkel) but this is a good pick.
20. Boston Red Sox - 2B Mercury House Grade: B+
Boston already has two great 2Bs on their roster, but House at 20 is outstanding.
21. Seattle Cascades - SP Danny Rose Grade: B
Rose doesn't have an extremely high ceiling, but Seattle wanted a young SP and Rose is a better than average one.
22. Baltimore Orioles - RP Simon Garfunkel Grade: A
Baltimore gets Garfunkel at 22 after passing on him at 19, which would bump that Lamela grade up to at least a B+ if hindsight were 20/20.
23. Arizona Diamondbacks - 1B Longi Tang Grade: B+
Arizona has a plethora of 1B already on their roster, but Chipman is old and De Zurbaran is better off as a DH. Tang is a young power hitter who could have realistically gone top 15.
24. San Antonio Alamos (from Yankees) - 3B Danilo Medina Grade: A
Finding Medina this late is already great value, and it comes at San Antonio's weakest position no less.
25. Washington Nationals - SP Cleet Lars Grade: B
Washington has so many needs that it's hard to go wrong here. Whether Janmaat and Lars excel or bust will make or break Washington's future.
26. Montreal Expos - SS Fabian Correa Grade: A
Montreal fans will be talking about Gilster Jr., but there's a lot to like about Correa too - 20 years old, switch hitter, good speed.
27. Cincinnati Reds - 2B Kota Mori Grade: D
Hollinn has proven himself to be one of the best GMs in the league, and Mori fits right into his strategy. But this feels like a complete waste of a 1st round pick, as Mori is unplayable offensively and Hollinn could have traded a bag of baseballs to get him in the 2nd round.
28. Toronto Blue Jays - SP Marco Dempsey Grade: C-
I can see the potential in Dempsey, but this is a reach, especially with the depth of offensive talent left on the board. I might like this pick more if he were 20 years old, but this isn't a 1st round pitcher.

Pence's 2037 Mock Draft
1. Minnesota Twins - CF Brandon Gilster Jr.
Gilster Jr. is that once in a lifetime, can't miss prospect. The Andrew Luck of Visionary. Minnesota has a ton of work to do but they get the future GOAT to build around.
2. Montreal Expos - SP Daryl Janmaat
The Expos are in a position to win now, and adding Janmaat to a rotation which already includes Hiroshi Chen and Jesus Medina could make it one of, if not the best in the league.
3. Washington Nationals - SP Gaston Frist
GM Jabarwick, after taking San Antonio from a cellar dweller to a legitimate title contender, takes over a team that doesn't have a whole lot going for it. Frist, along with SP Aonishi who Jabarwick brought over from San Antonio, gives Washington the foundations of a good rotation in the making.
4. San Francisco Giants - SP Harry Winks
San Francisco is in a tough division, but they have a lot of good offensive pieces to build around, and they can finally address an understaffed rotation with arguably the best pitcher in the draft falling to them at #4.
5. Detroit Tigers - C Matthew Craffa
Good catchers are scarce, and Craffa will immediately be one of the better defensive catchers in the league with a ton of upside to his bat. Detroit adds him to an offense that could be among the best in the AL if they can get a GM to stay active enough to manage it.
6. St. Louis Cardinals - 1B Ervin Gore
St. Louis has gone into a full rebuild, acquiring the #6 and #8 picks in the draft. They have many needs, but can't pass up a bat like Gore at #6.
7. Chicago White Sox - SS Khalil Greene Jr.
Greene Jr. is a defensive standout who hits for average, and GM Beansnap likes him so much that he's reportedly already agreed to a 7 year contract with him.
8. St. Louis Cardinals - SP Jan Vertonghen
St. Louis is already spending a ton on SPs, but with the franchise rebuilding the Cardinals grab a young pitcher with probably the most upside in the draft.
9. Philadelphia Phillies - RF Carlos Sortino
Philadelphia looks like a team ready to turn the corner. Without having many glaring needs, and with the top SPs already off the board, Philly adds another talented young hitter to their lineup.
10. New York Mets - SP Cha Du-Ri
How will the Mets follow Philly's pick as they look to stay competitive in the NL East? New York has some flexibility with this pick, but ultimately they need to address a rotation poised to struggle next year, and they do so with the flamethrowing Du-Ri.
11. Houston Astros - 3B Manlius Howard
GM Cubsfan wants to take Houston to the next level, and Howard can make an impact immediately as a DH and take over for Sierra at 3B next year.
12. Los Angeles Dodgers - CF Joshua Kincade
No one really remembers where this franchise came from or how it got to LA, but Dodgers fans have reason to be excited about their new team with legendary GM Rxk192 coming over from Toronto after winning 5 titles. With his first pick with the new LA Dodgers, Rxk surprises everyone and goes for a bit of a reach by picking up the speedy 20 year old at #12.
13. Los Angeles Angels - SP Erik Lamela
With the crazy amount of offensive depth on the "other" LA team, they might be one SP away from being a legitimate title contender. They won't find that impact arm at #13, so instead they decide to go the patient route and hope the 20 year old Lamela develops into a star.
14. Shanghai Crowned Cranes - 2B Mercury House
Shanghai seems to always put a competitive product on the field, and Wcp has quietly assembled a team capable of great things. Stud RP Garfunkel is tempting at this spot, but with the potential of House and 2B being Shanghai's only weak position, this is too good of a fit to pass up.
15. St. Louis Cardinals - LF Aries Matterhorn
Matterhorn's age may be a bit of a concern to St. Louis, but the 2nd best OBP in the draft is hard to pass up. The Cardinals go best hitter available with their 3rd pick of the first round.
16. Washington Nationals - 1B Longi Tang
The Nationals are on the clock for the second time, and this time they add a 20 year old power hitter who could potentially hit a ton of home runs once he hits his prime.
17. Texas Rangers - RP Simon Garfunkel
Texas' offense carried them to the postseason last season, but they need to improve their pitching if they want to remain competitive. In Garfunkel, they add a power arm who can anchor their bullpen for years to come.
18. Tokyo A's - RF Niles Drake
Drake's bat may need some time to develop, but he's a potential star in the making and gives Tokyo a future upgrade to their aging outfield.
19. Baltimore Orioles - RP Pat Woodcock
Baltimore has the bats and the rotation to make a run for the title, and Woodcock will make an immediate impact out of the pen.
20. Boston Red Sox - SS Eric Westphal
The 24 year old Westphal comes ready to play, and can step in whenever Boston decides SS Ando's better days are behind him.
21. Seattle Cascades - SP Danny Rose
Seattle is desperate to add some youth to their rotation, and Rose looks like good, safe value at #21.
22. Baltimore Orioles - 3B Gabriel Lowry
The O's may already have a stacked offense, but a .300 hitter at #22 is just amazing value.
23. Arizona Diamondbacks - SS Fabian Correa
Arizona already has a young SS they like in Bulajic, but aclilly17 loves fast switch hitters too much to not pick Correa here.
24. New York Yankees - SP Cleet Lars
The talented Lars' inability to find the strike zone has him dropping to #24, but no further as the Yankees snatch him up to solidify their rotation.
25. Washington Nationals - LF Jesus Suarez
With their third 1st round pick, the Nats add another 20 year old brimming with potential in Suarez.
26. Montreal Expos - 3B Danilo Medina
Montreal has Ripken locked up at 3B, but finding Medina at #26 is a steal.
27. Cincinnati Reds - 2B Aacosh Shah
Cincy is coming off its 3rd straight world series appearance, and has a historically great pitching staff but an underwhelming offense besides their outfield. Shah gives the Reds a future top of the order standout who can take over for the retiring Raul Silas at 2B.
28. Toronto Blue Jays - LF Dwight Rogoff
Toronto loses their legendary GM Rxk192, but the franchise appears to be in good hands as they've replaced him with veteran GM wallercrawler. Wallercrawler continues the Toronto tradition of finding gems at the end of the 1st round, as Rogoff might be the steal of the draft as the final pick in the 1st round.
Gilster Jr. is that once in a lifetime, can't miss prospect.
